The details on SpotOn
SpotOn we are a startup we're based in Manchester New Hampshire, we make a dog GPS fence, which is an IoT device that can contain your dog anywhere outside. It is a color that your dog wears, that communicates with their smartphone. And we invented this category and this product back in 2019.
What they look for in a candidate
The main qualities we look for at SpotOn are people who are passionate or intellectually curious, who can demonstrate that either in their prior jobs or even in their personal life, they are always in the pursuit of learning things, exploring things, asking how and why things are the way they are, we'd want people to come into this environment, which is very much a startup environment and help us build and having that curious curiosity is really helps people be successful. We also are looking for people who are data driven, we try to make as many decisions as possible based on data. And people who also like to prove out their theories that data do really well here. And then I would say the final thing is collaboration, we are an extremely collaborative team. When we make big decisions about products, there are people from every department, customer service, marketing, finance, Manufacturing Engineering at the table. And so we need people who can really work well with other people who are used to working across the organization representing their discipline, but then can work with an engineer or with a product manager or with marketing, to make the whole product and delivery successful.
SpotOn's interview process
So our interview process is pretty simple. The first step would be a phone interview with the hiring manager, just to get some basic information, provide information about the role and make sure that there's a fit. If there is a fit, then there would probably be another one hour phone conversation with the hiring manager. And after that, there would be just one in person meeting where the candidate would meet with the hiring manager, and between two and three other members of our team.
How to stand out
I think the big thing about standing out in the interview process is having great examples from your prior positions to answer questions. So if a an interviewer asking you to talk about how you have used data in the past to have very specific examples is always good, as opposed to just saying, Well, I've used Excel and I do data analysis all the time. But if you can give a specific example of a project, what you know what the question was that you were trying to answer, how you went about doing that, and what the results were, that always stands out, because not everyone answers questions that way. I also think just being sincere and genuine about your interests, and your prior experience goes along with it. We're a very down to earth company here. And we really appreciate people who are also down to earth. And I think the other thing is just being consistent with follow up. Thank you note goes a long way. I've definitely reconsidered people who've sent me a thank you note or who have regularly followed up because it obviously shows that the person is very interested in the role is organized and is also very professional. So I think, don't hesitate to follow up, whether that's a quick email note or even a follow up. If I told you we were going to get back to you within a week, which we really tried to do that. But if for some reason I'm a day late, don't hesitate to send a message to me or a hiring manager asking, what's the next step?
Why they should be on your radar
I think SpotOn that is really exciting time in its history. We just hit 50 employees, and we were recently listed on the Inc 5000 fastest growing companies. So we are growing really quickly, both revenue and people. And this creates lots of opportunities for people to get to do work that they might not be able to do at a bigger company because there's there's so many layers to get to show that they can do even more to get promoted faster. We also are working with some really cool technologies. We are an IoT device. And we're working with all kinds of RF type technologies, not just GPS but some additional ones that we're working on with new products. So it's an opportunity to be part of a company that's growing profitable successful, but it's also working with cutting edge technologies and the couple of next products that we're coming out with our products that don't exist in the mark Today either so it's definitely a time you could be part of that inventing something totally new
