Russell's background and prior experience
Yeah, I think I have maybe a more diverse background than than a bunch of people. And maybe that explains kind of the, the different title than what you might be expecting. So my background was first in speech pathology, I was a clinician for quite some time, I have a master's degree in speech pathology, I switched gears to brain injury, and specifically neuromodulation, or brain stimulation with electricity to modify behavior of the brain. And I so did my PhD in my postdoctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital, in a physical therapy unit. And so met some of the people working at Linus Health there at Mass Gen. And that's how I ended up at Linus Health.
A day in the life of a Clinical Development Manager
No, it does, it does vary a lot. And that's really one of the reasons that I came to Linus. And really why I choose a startup over something else, right, I could have gone to other places I, I came from academics had offers in academia. And I chose a startup, but I chose Linus for for the main reason that I would get a breadth of experience. And that's what I wanted, I wanted to get a little bit of experience in product development, I wanted to get a little bit of experience in, in clinical development, but I also had a background in signal processing of speech, and voice and video as well. And I wanted to be able to continue to do that. In general, I like writing I like documenting processes. And so that's another big part of what I do here. So A Day in the Life is a lot of each of those things, and then whatever else comes up, I get to deal with direct customer questions and, and recommendations. And I do a lot of the QA and QC of our digital platform, and the results of our clinical platform as well. So I get to communicate, communicate directly with doctors and physicians and neuro neuro psychologists and, and so again, not something that I intended to do, and I am, but something that I get to do, which is kind of awesome, right, I get I get a full breadth of the experience outline is.
What is next for Russell's career path
Yeah, so because I'm a manager right now, I guess, the next direct step would be to a director position, which would just have more direct reports. And so you do less of the, the technical hands on kind of day to day, and it's more management of those technical responsibilities. So that would be the next step. It would also be a lot more of the process, the overall process and integration with other teams. So we have our clinical team, our medical team, which is which is the team that I had. We have the technical side, which is our engineering, and then our data science, and then our product development. So as you progress, it becomes more integrations of those systems rather than individual contributors on each of those verticals.
Advice for someone looking to land a similar position
If there was someone on a similar career career path to me, I would I would empathize with them. But the main the main advice I would give for someone who wanted to be in a position like this or wanted to be at a company like this is just be open, be flexible. I think there's a tendency nowadays to focus really, really stringent stringently on your title, and what it is that you contribute? I don't know if my title necessarily, I don't know if I should say this, but I don't know if it reflects exactly what I do at Linus Health because I do so much and, and I that's something that I enjoy if you're not open if you're not flexible to to contributing in various different ways even if it doesn't necessarily align with your your view of what you want to do or what you see yourself doing. Then maybe maybe a startup environment is isn't that the place you should be looking but if you're okay to be flexible, if you're okay to take on a bunch of different responsibilities and and get new experiences then this is this is the place this is this is the type of environment that you want for Sure
