Peter, thanks so much for joining us.
Peter Hewitt, FreshCut Paper
Hey, Keith, thanks for having me.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
I'm excited to talk to you because we're going to talk about a really exciting consumer e-commerce company in the Boston tech scene called FreshCut Paper. So let's talk about this company, what is FreshCut Paper?
Peter Hewitt, FreshCut Paper
Founded in 2021, just a couple years ago, it's a new contemporary way to send flowers. They ship flat and a little envelope, you can customize and send it just like flowers. And at the other end, they pop up. And they act just like a real bouquet of flowers that come with a custom card, you can write a little note on it with the flowers. And we are attempting to be just a little slice of the flower market. It's, I think, $8 billion market in the US. And we can just take a little piece of that. And in a very sort of low cost, environmentally friendly way and have a contemporary way to send flowers.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
Let's talk about your background because you're a serial entrepreneur. And that's an important piece of the story here.
Peter Hewitt, FreshCut Paper
Yeah, well, thank you. I've done a few things, pretty much always worked on my own or my own companies. I went to RISD and studied product design, doing a bunch of projects from MoMA along the way, and started a company called by T. Forte, back a while back, where we did really beautiful high end teas and tea accessories, little pyramid with a leafy magazine, and grew that pretty big, sold 35 countries, exclusive Hotels Resorts around the world. So that's a Sara Lee. And and this is my next venture,
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
What led you down the path of starting this company?
Peter Hewitt, FreshCut Paper
Yeah, so I was trying to figure out what to do next. And I read an article on how the important flower business, which is almost all cut flowers are important, is really not a very green proposition. There are lots of pesticides grown halfway around the world brought here on Jetson ice. And they're moving from place to place shipping across the country, again, with a vase to somewhere else to end user who might bring it to a landfill week later. So this is a really carbon heavy proposition. So I thought if I could do something really like treading lightly on the earth with just a few sheets of paper that people could really think of as flowers. What a great situation environmentally and financially for us. And and for the end user.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
You're building a company, obviously. So what's what's the culture like working there? What's What's the day to day working environment like?
Peter Hewitt, FreshCut Paper
Yeah, so it's really good. It's really nice to put together a company a team. Again, I've done it before. But I think it's really design driven company, a lot. A lot of those staff currently are really designers, paper engineers. It's a pretty fun place to work. We're always coming up with new ideas and concepts and showing them around what do you think about this is to cactus be like it. So it's pretty creative and fun environment, we renovate a whole beautiful floor of old mill building out in Concord mass, and it's really lovely. I think it's been a family feeling with lounges and sofas and kitchens, and we're all pretty much enjoying it. So it's a nice place to be.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
Alright, so the job market regardless of market conditions, whether it's good or bad, the top tier talent always has options. So why should someone consider an opportunity at FreshCut Paper?
Peter Hewitt, FreshCut Paper
Well, I think this is an exciting opportunity. Because we're creating a new category, there's really never been anything like this. And I think there's a huge opportunity here, because we're fair amount of creative people here we can really be you can do anything we want. We've launched a category spelled out after this, which we're already developing for it to launch in about a year. So there's a lot of flexibility where we're bootstrapped. So we make all decisions, there's no one who's gonna make a decision or closes down. We're quite profitable growing quickly, neat place to be very creative. I do think it's a fun place to be.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
